David Adedeji Adeleke, also known as Davido, has a rich cultural background. He was born in Atlanta, in the United States, but lived in Nigeria most of his life. At the age of 16, he moved to Huntsville, US, where he went to school at the Oakwood University. he was sent by his wealthy farther, also known as ‘Chief Adeleke’, who earned his fortune by founding Pacific Holdings, a company that deals in steel, oil, gas, and more.
Around this time, Davido started to fiddle around with music. He began making beats and used most of the money he got from his father to invest in gear. After three semesters he decided to drop out of school and eventually moved to the London, United Kingdom, to focus more on vocals.
Chief Adeleke in the mean time was trying to locate his son. When Davido eventually did turn up on the airport in Nigeria his father had him arrested. Adeleke’s son had gotten new tattoos and piercings, but not a degree in business management he was sent out to earn. They made a deal: Davido would attend a private university two hours north of Lagos to still honour the family name with a degree.
This would not be easy for Davido and soon he started to blow off exams to record new songs. He released his first single in 2011, called ‘Back When’. It was his second single that catapulted him into the spotlights. ‘Dami Duro’ was a hit in Nigeria and was played in a lot of clubs.
In this clip he labels himself ‘omo baba olowo’, which is Yoruba for “son of a wealthy man.”. As his music career became more and more successful, his grades were falling. Davido decided to drop out of school again, this time with the support of his father who had seen the business potential of his son’s music career. Chief Adeleke did still want his son to graduate and therefore paid for the university to build a music department for just his son.
Davido graduated in 2015 after a lot of breaks to focus on his career. After the first two singles, he was invited to perform all over Africa. Besides that he dropped his first album in 2012, named ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ a reference to his second single. The most successful single other than ‘Dami Duro’ from that album was ‘Ekuro’:
Aye and other songs
After the release of his first album Davido continued working on new music for his second album. He made a lot of hit singles and videos. The most popular one was ‘Aye’. This love song was released in 2014 and at the time of writing has more than 30 million YouTube views.
Another global hit was ‘Skelewu’, reaching as much as 17 million YouTube views at the time of writing.
Davido is not only a solo artist and has featured on songs of other artists. Think of collaborations with Runtown, Humblesmith, Diamond and many other great artists. In 2013 he made the hit ‘Nek-Unek’ together with MC Galaxy. Watch the great video that has more than 15 million YouTube views.
In 2015 Davido and Meek Mill made the song ‘Fans Mi’. For this song Meek Mill was paid $200.000 and they made a real banger with an American feel to it. A real trap song. This music is more hiphop than afrobeats.
Since the start of his career Davido has his own record label. Together with his brother Adewale Adeleke he started HKN Music to publish his own music, with HKN meaning ‘Honourable Kings of New-school’. Now the label also publishes music of B Red, Danagog, Sina Rambo and others. Check out the dancehall single ‘Twerk’ of Davido and B Red for example:
Being the son of a rich Nigerian business man, Davido was born rich. With his talents, combined with the business experience of his father and his brief education in business management, he managed to become one of the richest Nigerian artists. Not bad for a guy that entered the music scene in 2011. His net worth is rumored to be $15 million at the time of writing. Besides his shows he made his money by having several endorsement deals with telecommunication company MTN and Close Up.
